Julian Richardson

Julian Richardson

Founder

Julian Richardson started his career in the re/insurance sector in 1992. He was a producing broker at Marsh focusing on oil and gas business in the Middle East and Africa. He helped lead the development of products and business opportunities within the carbon market for the wider MMC group of companies which included Marsh, Mercer & Putnam. In 2004 he joined GE Insurance Solutions and was a senior underwriting risk manager responsible for the energy and marine portfolio of the Global Markets business. He was a member of the Global Market executive committee and was the FSA approved person for the London legal entity. In 2006 Julian founded Parhelion.

Julian has an MBA from Cranfield School of Management where his dissertation was on Carbon Trading Risk. He is a Research Associate at Texas A&M University, Geochemical and Environmental Research Group. See: http://gerg.tamu.edu/people/science-team/index.html

He has spoken at numerous international conferences on risk management and climate change insurance.

Dr Anthony Knap Parhelion

Dr Anthony Knap

Director

Dr. Knap is currently the James R. Whatley Endowed Chair in Geosciences, Professor of Oceanography and Director, Geochemical and Environmental Research Group at Texas A&M University. His expertise is in the intersection between business and science and especially the affect on regional and global climate on meteorological events and how these changes affect business. Eighteen years ago Knap founded the Risk Prediction Initiative, a partnership between the science community and the Insurance industry providing essential information on natural disasters (tropical cyclones, floods, tornadoes, hail, fire and geo-hazards), and their effect on the business of risk. Dr. Knap is on the Board of Board of Shoreline Mutual (Bermuda) Ltd. and Arvak Ltd. which are financial pollution guarantee companies for ship owners worldwide. Until its sale to Validus Re, he was on the Board of Flagstone Reinsurance, a NYSE listed property catastrophe re-insurer. He was on the Board of the Offshore Energy Institute in the US. Dr. Knap was President, Director and Senior Research Scientist at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) for 25 years. He is the author of over 100 peer-reviewed publications in the environment and climate and is a current member of the Steering Committee of the Global Ocean Observing system of the UN.

Tom Wilson

Risk Manager

Tom has 30 years’ experience in the power energy business, having held a wide range of senior positions and executive directorships in power plant operations management and wholesale energy (fuels, electricity, carbon) trading.  He’s experienced in project origination and energy company finance structuring in the UK and internationally. Tom joined the London insurance market in 2009 as CEO of a start up, MGA, underwriting power operational covers with USD 100m capacity line deployed on an EML basis, backed by the Hannover Re group. Tom later joined Hannover’s direct placement arm in London as Risk Manager with global remit for power placements for Inter-Hannover.  In 2016 Tom took the role as Head of the Operational Power business line within the Pioneer group with a USD 30m line. Tom brings a wealth of technical, operational, commercial and underwriting expertise and experience.

Darrell Boyd

Global Head of Geothermal

Darrell was most recently CEO of the Tulu Moye Geothermal (TMGO) investment SPV in Ethiopia with EEP, MoWIE & MoFEC for investors Meridiam & Reykjavik Geothermal 2018-2021. TMGO were the first IPP to achieve Effectiveness of their PPA & IA in Ethiopia and the first private sector foreign direct investor to undertake geothermal exploration drilling. He also built the first geothermal power plant in Ethiopia during the late 1990’s.

Darrell has over thirty-five years of experience working and living in eleven countries across company management, investment finance, consultancy, contracting and project management. Prior to leading TMGO he served as Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Fulcrum Infrastructure Group (A Meridiam Investment) based in London.

Darrell’s energy and power sector experience includes being a Co-Founder, COO, Board Director and Head-In-Country for Symbion Power LLC, where he was responsible for the tendering, award and delivery of all projects in Iraq and Afghanistan, securing and delivering over $330 million of projects commissioned by the U.S. and Iraqi governments in the electrical sector including substations, transmission lines and generation infrastructure reconstruction. Prior to that, he has been the country manager in Ethiopia for NORICIL, a subsidiary of the Norwegian engineering firm Veidekke, and also served as NORICIL’s operations manager for all countries across East and Southern Africa playing a key role in the completion of 50 projects in the energy and contracting sector on the continent.

Kate has 15 years’ experience as a Company Secretary, training with Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu and working for blue chip companies such as Kingfisher and RELX (formerly Reed Elsevier). She has significant experience in driving complex projects and processes and in advising diverse groups of stakeholders, as well as in-depth experience of the preparation and review of technical documentation. Kate has recently joined the team and is using her skills and experience to support execution of Parhelion’s geothermal risk finance solution.

David Foreman Parhelion

David is Chairman and a founding member of Ark Syndicate Management Ltd, a Lloyds of London Managing Agency.
David came to Lloyds of London in 1973 and over a career of 43 years at Lloyds has Underwritten for 4 Lloyds Syndicates never having lost money for his backers. In 2007 David, along with two colleagues, established Ark and after two years as the Active Underwriter, David assumed the role of Director of Underwriting, becoming Executive Chair in 2014. In 2016 David became Non Executive but remained Chairman of Ark.
During his underwriting career David specialised in Direct and Reinsurance Property underwriting as well as holding the role of Named Underwriter for one of Lloyds’ major syndicates which underwrote across most classes of business generating in excess of $1000m of Annual Gross Written Premium.
David has held the positions of Chairman of the Lloyds Non Marine Association, Chairman of the Lloyds Market Association Non Marine Panel and was in attendance at the Lloyds Council for two years.

Islay Lord

Islay began her insurance career in 2000 as a broker with Willis in the London market before joining Hiscox as an Underwriter at Lloyd’s and in Guernsey.  A proficient Spanish speaker, Islay focused on underwriting special risks for corporate and high-net worth clients across Latin America and Europe.  During her time at Hiscox Islay led the integration project of a newly acquired AON business unit to form an internal broking team, Hiscox ASM.

An opportunity to move overseas in 2008 was the start of almost a decade living and working in the UAE, India and Pakistan, latterly working with the Dubai branch office of Lloyd’s reinsurance broker RFIB.

Now UK-based, Islay will be underwriting and developing Parhelion’s environmental commodities products.

Jeremy Mathis

Chief Sustainability Officer

Dr. Mathis is a Professor of Environmental Policy in the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.  From 2019 to 2021, he held the position of Director of the Board on Chemical Sciences and Technology at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM).  Before that, Dr. Mathis served as a science policy advisor in the Office of U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska).

From 2012 to 2017, Dr. Mathis worked in various programmatic and executive roles for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), where he specialised in global climate change and resilience.  From 2007 to 2012, he was a Professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the founding Director of the first U.S. Ocean Acidification Research Center.

Dr. Mathis has published more than 80 peer-reviewed journal articles that have been cited more than 6,000 times.  He has chaired numerous national and international working groups and committees, visiting more than 60 countries in a professional capacity.  Dr. Mathis received his undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering from McNeese State University and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Miami (FL).

Mike Newman

Mike Newman started his career as a Broker at Lloyd’s and continued in the U.S.A. where he held senior broker positions at Sedgwick James and Minet.

As the CEO and Founder of International Energy Insurance Brokers, Inc. and St. Andrews Risk Services, LLC., Mike grew two successful professional services firms with offices in California, Texas and London. The firms specialized in the energy industry with clients engaged in every aspect of the oil supply chain with global operating exposures that required insurance programs in the international underwriting markets. Integro Insurance Brokers acquired the two firms in 2015 and Mike continues as a Principal of the firm.

Mike has a Law degree from the University of Cambridge and an MBA from the University of Southern California (USC). He has published several articles on Energy and Environmental risks and spoken on related topics at many industry conferences. He holds Surplus Lines insurance licenses in several U.S. states.
